NONGMEIKAPAM GOPAL SINGH

Nongmeikapam Gopal Singh, popularly known as Gopal Mohari, was born on May 1, 1884 at Ningom Thongjao. He was the third child of N. Angangmacha Singh and Taruni Devi. Shri Gopal Singh showed signs of selfless services even from his childhood. His family left Ningom Thongjao and came to settle at Uripok Tourangba Leikai where he married Sijamacha Devi, a lady of high family. They were blessed by seven children namely Ketuki, Nabakishore, Iboyaima, Ibochouba, Ibotombi, Tombisana and Kosheswar. He belonged to the educated elite group of the British period and served as Assistant Head Clerk at the Sadar Panchayat Court, now District and Session Court. He retired from service during Second World War.

Retirement from service did not affect his life. On the other hand, he took up the public causes with vigour and zeal. In those days, there were very few schools and libraries in and around Imphal. His name is attached with the establishment of Tombisana High School, Tamphasana Girl’s High School, Ibotonsana Girl’s High School, Churachand High School, Ram Lal Paul High School, Public Library etc. He was also connected with organizations such as Manipur Nikhil Hindu Mahasabha, Manipur Congress Dal etc. Besides these, N.G. College, which carries his name is a permanent mark of his selfless hard work and generosity to the society. Nongmeikapam Gopal Singh died on May 14, 1971.
